The Blogging From A to Z April Challenge: H is for Humbucking

Monday, 9 April 2012

My posts in the The Blogging From A to Z April Challenge are all about interesting words. Words that are weird, intriguing, poetic or just plain cool.

H is for Humbucking

Sounds like it could be some sort of rural pursuit in medieval England ("Let's go a-humbucking upon a moonlit night"). Or a Humbucker could be some sort of vicious steampunk flying insect. But, of course, it's actually a type of pick-up on an electric guitar.

The pick-up is the thing that converts the vibrations of the strings into electrical signals. Which can then be amplified. Possibly a lot. Humbuckers are so called because they use two coils rather than one to help cancel out or "buck" the hum often associated with single-coil pickups. All I can say is, they still make a racket when I use them ...

  1. I think going a-humbucking upon a moonlit night should be revived! Tis a fine tradition (much better than it being a guitar thingie!)LOL!

    Take care

  2. Very cool, Simon. I'm enjoying your A-Z very much indeed.

  3. This one I didn't know - and my husband is a musician so he knows all about it (he's now being very superior).

  4. I was going to say I was surprised to hear a new word again, but when I read more I knew why. I have no musical ability to speak of, so it's no surprise then when I don't know something about music.

    Looking forward to reading more!

  5. I really like your A-Z theme.. Will be coming back tomorrow for more knowledge.

  6. Old Kitty - We should start a preservation society!

    Deborah - Many thanks.

Reb - Sorry about that! Hopefully I can redress the balance.

Timothy - Me neither! Just the racket thing ...

  7. I like the "vicious steampunk flying insect" definition better. But that's just me. :)

  8. I enjoyed your post today! Good luck with the challenge!

  9. Wow, this one, I knew!

    Gibson Les Paul = Humbuckers

    Fender Stratocaster = Single-coil, non-humbucking.

  10. What a neat word! It's really fun saying it.

  11. Madeline - I think I might too...

Donna - Thanks, glad you enjoyed it.

Chris - Figured you might, given your picture.

Tracy - Agreed. It's a fine word. Thanks for dropping by.

  12. Whoa, that one is cool! I definitely would have guessed it was the weird English sport. :)

  13. I'm a big fan of the humbuckers for my guitar playing, but I didn't know where the name came from. Very cool!

  14. Thanks for teaching me a new word! You chose a great theme for the challenge! Julie

  15. Hi Simon .. did you ever see 'Call My BLuff' .. this reminds me of select 'the real explanation' ..
