The Blogging From A to Z April Challenge: I is for Ichthyic

Tuesday, 10 April 2012

My posts in the The Blogging From A to Z April Challenge are all about interesting words. Words that are weird, intriguing, poetic or just plain cool.

I is for Ichthyic

Ichthyic just means "like a fish". It derives from the ancient Greek word ikhthus meaning, well, a fish. The word piscine, derived from the Latin, means the same thing but, let's face it, just doesn't sound as good.

I like the word's rhythm and shape, but I also like it because it's almost impossible to spell properly first time. Or is that just me?

It's also another good Lovecraftian word. They seem to keep cropping up in these posts ...

  1. I just tried to say the word and failed miserably :)

love the word, never learned it :)

  2. Spell? I can't even pronounce it without spitting all over myself! LOL! Take care

  3. Sylvia - Glad it was of interest!

Old Kitty - Try and get it into your conversation!

  4. And of course, this is the root from whence we get the kid's word, "Ichthkkk!"

As in, "Ichthkkk, this tastes like fish!"

  5. Great word! I had to type it into to get the pronunciation right. Oh, and the word piscine also means swiming pool, in French that is. But you probably already knew that. Interested to see what word is up next... (:

  6. Chris - Absolutely!

Elise - I'm not entirely sure I pronounce it correctly I must admit ...

  7. Great word. I do love learning new words... though I can't guarantee I'll remember this one!

  8. doreeweller - Fair enough; I can't say I use it that much myself ...

  9. My friend and I once won at "chocolate Trivial Pursuit" because we knew this word. It was a shining moment. :)

I'd love to know what you think.
